ACTIVITIES: Student Council Wins State Awards

Ridge View’s StuCo was recognized for the following awards during the SCASC State Convention: SCASC Gold Honor Council; 2nd Place Recognition Project for Teacher of the Month; and 3rd Place School Spirit for Homecoming 2021. Student Body President Domenique Branch was inducted into the Terry McCoy Leadership Hall of Fame and Ms. Paige Fennell was elected President of the Advisors Association. During the conference, students attended workshops, enjoyed keynote speeches focused on leadership, and met students from all over the state.

ACTIVITIES: Dance Marathon TODAY, April 2nd

TODAY, April 2nd, our Ridge View’s National Honor Society is hosting its fourth annual dance marathon that funds children’s hospitals nationwide while partnered with the University of South Carolina dance marathon and Children’s Miracle Network. This year our goal is $6,000. They’re currently at $4,000 and would appreciate it if you click the image to help their cause.

WOMAN OF THE DAY: Ellen DeGeneres (1958-Present)

Ellen DeGeneres is a media mogul and considered to be a multimedia genius, having mastered film, TV, voice-acting, and stand-up comedy. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 and continues to remind us that the world should be more fun and loving place … with dancing, of course.

WOMAN OF THE DAY: Winona LaDuke (1959-Present)

Winona LaDuke is a vibrant Native American activist, author, and environmentalist. A member of the Anishinaabe nation, she filed lawsuits to recover lands withheld from Native American communities, reminding the nation of long-standing wrongdoings. LaDuke has devoted her life to advocating for Indigenous control of their homelands, natural resources, and cultural practices. She combines economic and environmental approaches in her efforts to create a thriving and sustainable community for her own White Earth reservation and Indigenous populations across the country.

WOMAN OF THE DAY: Maya Lin (1959-Present)

Maya Lin is a well known artist and architect. She was a 21-year-old undergraduate at Yale when she won a competition to design her most famous work, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Controversial at first, but now one of the capital’s most visited monuments, it proves the healing power of art.

The FBI Columbia Division is currently accepting applications for the 2022 FBI Columbia Teen Academy. The FBI Columbia Teen Academy is a two-day program that allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI through blocks of instruction and demonstrations at the field office. Students are provided with several presentations on topics including terrorism, cyber, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Please note the program size is limited and only Juniors and Seniors (2022-2023 academic year) may apply.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact the Columbia Community Outreach Program at columbia_outreach@fbi.gov.

WOMAN OF THE DAY: Michelle Obama (1964-Present)

Michelle Obama made her mark in history as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America. Before she was a First Lady, she was a lawyer and Mom in Chief. During Barack Obama’s time in office, she led several meaningful initiatives, most notably her Let’s Move! campaign to fight childhood obesity. Her official portrait was just released at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Woman of the Day: Amelia Earhart (1897-1939)

Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who set many flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. During a flight to circumnavigate the globe, Earhart disappeared somewhere over the Pacific in July 1937. Her plane wreckage was never found, and she was officially declared lost at sea. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century.
