Black History Moment: Sarah Elisabeth Goode (1855-1905)

Sarah Elisabeth Goode was an American entrepreneur and inventor. She was the second known African-American woman to receive a United States patent, which she received in 1885 for her folding cabinet bed invention. It was a cabinet bed that folded into a roll-top desk that had compartments for writing supplies and stationery.

2022 Student Writing Contest, Deadline March 1st
South Carolina high school juniors and seniors are invited to honor outstanding South Carolina African Americans by participating in Dominion Energy & SC Department of Education Strong Men & Women in SC History student writing contest. One winner for each region – Midlands, Upstate, Lowcountry, Pee Dee, amd CSRA. The essay cannot exceed 500 words and submissions are due Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The student winners will receive an Apple MacBook Air. The student’s school will receive a $1,000 award. For more information, click on the image.
