Black History Moment: Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806)

Benjamin Banneker was one of the USA’s most illustrious but little known personalities. Banneker was an African-American almanac author, surveyor, landowner and farmer who had knowledge of mathematics and natural history. He was a genius who rose from very difficult circumstances, and with bare minimum formal education managed to educate and transform himself into an inventor, astronomer, writer, and and advocate of human rights.

2022 Student Writing Contest, Deadline March 1st
South Carolina high school juniors and seniors are invited to honor outstanding South Carolina African Americans by participating in Dominion Energy & SC Department of Education Strong Men & Women in SC History student writing contest. One winner for each region – Midlands, Upstate, Lowcountry, Pee Dee, amd CSRA. The essay cannot exceed 500 words and submissions are due March 1, 2022. The student winners will receive an Apple MacBook Air. The student’s school will receive a $1,000 award. For more information, click on the image.

ACADEMICS: Senior Faith Aiken, Recipient of the Award for Aspirations in Computing

Congratulations goes to Class of 2022 student, Faith Aiken. She was selected for the Award for Aspirations in Computing. She is one of 400 students nationwide being recognized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). This year, 40 winners and 360 honorable mentions were selected from more than 3,500 talented young applicants. Aiken is also a member of the Robotics team, a student lead on R2i2’s Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Team, and served as a student facilitator in last year’s Students for Equitable Education (SEE) Summit hosted by Digital Promise. In 2021, she also received the South Carolina Affiliate of NCWIT regional award for Aspirations in Computing. We are so proud of Aiken.
